* Read About Kaboodle's Mission (it's short n' sweet)
  • "...Finding and keeping track of one's favorite products online [shopping lists] and deciding what to buy..."
  • You can create separate Shoppings Lists for any objective: So-n-So's Birthday, Stuff I Reorder Often, Books I Want, Best Games for my New PS3, or whatever.
  • Because you can share your saved lists, you have an easy way to:
    1. Let others know what you want, and
    2. Get advice from others on what's best to buy, and
    3. See what others are buying that are similar, or
    4. Collaborate with others and copy from each other's lists with a magic button     "(Add to my list button)"

Jun. 7th, 2007 06:20 pm OVERFLOW Software Review (Mac OS X)

(amended as of June 13, 2007)

See Overflow Developer's Page for Full Detail: Stunt Software - Overflow

My Review of OVERFLOW (more than a Dock Extender) | Rating: ****/5
(legend: "App" - Application | "OF" - Overflow)

I've been using Overflow for 6 months. It's an indispensable tool for extending the dock; for organizing my projects, applications, folders and files; and for letting me create Finder portals to my folders. It's a real time saver and so EASY to use.

* Pluses - Overflow is great for:
(+) ORGANIZING my things into groups (called categories). For example I have one for "Apps I'm Test-Driving" and another for "Gaming" (All groups open from the same window)
(+) Organizing all my project stuff (folders, files, even apps) into a single category (per project)
(+) Show/Hide Hot Key Activation (I use [F13])
(+) Optional Navigation of items from the keyboard
(+) Activating items by a SINGLE Click
(+) AUTO-HIDING after I click on something (OR if I click outside of its window)
(+) Acting as an extension of the Dock
(+) Letting me REDUCE the number of Dock items
(+) SAVING me gobs of time
(+) For letting me do ALL these things with Overflow:

(+) Create Finder Folder Portals: D&D Finder items onto my Folders there (to have them Moved or Added to target Finder Folders)
(+) D&D Finder items onto applications there
(+) View & Access ALL Folder Finder contents à la right-click (control-click)
(+) Reveal items in Finder

* Other Pluses:
(+) *Tip* - I can sort a Finder window (in icon view) in the Order I wish and then D&D multiple items from there to OF. They will then be Added in the same Order!
(+) Can Add single or multiple items via standard File Dialog
(+) The developer has been very responsive to my questions and suggestions
(+) Offers student and veteran discount

* Minuses:
(-) NO Undo, for when I accidentally delete the wrong item (oops)
(-) Can NOT D&D to a OF Folder Alias (must use original folders)
(-) If you have it set to "Always Show Item Titles" in Preferences, you Can NOT see complete Titles if they're lengthy. Turn this option OFF and then you will see full titles when you mouse-over things.

* My Sample Screen Shots:

* What's Missing? Well here are some missing features that I think would make it an even BETTER gem of a product:
  • Title Tooltips should appear for all items with Truncated titles
  • D&D Finder items onto OF Folder to Create Finder Aliases (with [apple]+[option/alt] keys)
  • D&D Web Page URLs
  • D&D & Store Text Snippets (or Images) from the Web or Documents
  • Show all Active Apps in the OF Toolbar so that we can futz with them too!
  • When we D&D an item to a folder or app and hold it there briefly (1 sec?), bring the folder or app to the FRONT for us so that we can THEN Drop the item onto the app document.
  • Sometimes, navigating the world of Mac Finder can be a bit tedious in getting data where you need it to go. A really useful enhancement, that would help here, is the capability to D&D an Overflow Item from its window (in Finder-ese fashion) to Move/Copy/Alias its Finder Source to a different Finder folder (without removing it from OF). This would be a real godsend ... Overflow on Wings.
* Summary: Overflow is an indispensable tool for every Mac OS X user.

Thanks Stunt Software and MacUpdate - I'm buying another copy today for a family member who just graduated from Marine Corps boot camp.

May. 6th, 2007 11:27 am OpenOffice.org - Free MS Office Suite Alternative

OpenOffice.org (acronym: OOo) is a FREE MS Office Suite alternative - do NOT download it from any site that is charging for it!

* What is OpenOffice.org?

OpenOffice.org is both an open-source product and a project. The product is a multiplatform office productivity suite. It includes desktop applications such as a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a presentation manager, and a drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to those of other office suites. OpenOffice.org also works transparently with a variety of file formats, including those of Microsoft Office. (source: VersionTracker.com)

For example, OOo works with MS Word documents. You can open Word documents, edit them and save them in Word format. You can also create new Word documents.

* How does OOo compare with MS Office?
MS Office is a productivity suite including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook. OOo likewise includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program and a presentation manager that function just like Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Moreover, OOo permits you to work with (and even create) original MS Office document formats!

OpenOffice.org is a good product and millions of people are now using it instead of MS Office.

* How do I know it's free?
Click here to read the latest press release from OpenOffice.org.
OpenOffice.org software is provided under the GNU Lesser General Public Licence (LGPL) and may be used free of charge for any purpose, private or commercial.

* Where should you download it from and why?
VersionTracker.com
VersionTracker is the #1 site for downloading and evaluating software for all platforms (Mac, PC, Unix, etc.) and they always have the latest software versions available.

Some websites I have checked are *not* offering the latest version of OOo and there are very critical security patches applied to the newest version.

Official VersionTracker page for Downloading OpenOffice.org:

Windows version
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/44756
The latest version number as of this writing is: OOo - 2.2 RC4

MAC OS X version
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10456
The latest version number as of this writing is: OOo - 2.2

* How Often Should you Check for OOo Updates at VersionTracker? Once a month using the download link above.

* How Can I Donate to OpenOffice.org?
Click here for Contributing Funds to OpenOffice.org
We strongly prefer that people become contributors. In most cases, being a contributor will go much further than a monetary donation. However, for those who cannot offer time, we would gladly accept a monetary donation to the project.

Mar. 31st, 2007 04:15 pm Mac Education & Tips

Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) Education

Are you new to the Mac, new to computers, or just need a refresher course on how to get the most out of your Mac?

Mac 101

*OR* have you switched to Mac from Windows?

Switch 101

Tiger Tips:
Legend: "+" - hold down these keys together

  • HELP! - The Help Command
    • There is Help anytime you need it in any application (including Finder). Either use the [ Help ] menu or the keyboard shortcut: [ apple/command ]+[ shift ]+[?]. The Help Command brings up the Help Viewer for your application (app).  Help Viewer is an app too.
    • Speaking of shortcuts, you can search the Help Viewer about anything: any application and any keyword. Use it to search for "keyboard shortcuts" for example.
    • If your computer is online when you use the Help Viewer it will present you with the latest information on any relevant topic.
    • Navigate the Help Viewer just like a browser with the Go Back & Go Forward buttons in the toolbar.

  • You Changed Your Mind - The [ esc ] Key = [ Cancel ]
    • When Dragging things with the Mouse, don't drag it back to the source - instead (while still holding the mouse button down) just press [ esc ]. The object will automatically return back to where it was (oh snap!). This works in any app.
    • When backing out of (print, open, save, whatever) dialog windows the fastest way is to press [ esc ]. It's the same thing as clicking on the [ Cancel ] button in the window.

  • Navigating with Arrow Keys
    • In Finder you can expand and collapse folders (in List View) with the right [ -> ] and left [ <- ] arrow keys. Use the up and down arrows to head upward and downward. In Columns View navigate through folders with these keys. And in Icon View use these keys to navigate to other items in the Folder Window or on the Desktop. The behavior varies a little depending on the folder View setting.
    • You can similarly navigate in Open and Save File dialog windows with these keys.
More to come!

Current Mood: chipper
